Le Cabaret du Néant

Calypso Mahieu is a freelance photographer and video maker.

I designed and developed a website for Calypso Mahieu’s diploma project at ECAL (Lausanne). Her project, Le Cabaret du Néant, is inspired by spiritualism and the macabre imagery of cabarets at the beginning of the 20th century.

The website takes the form of a long single page, reproducing the itinerary of a visit to one of these cabarets. Photographs and videos appear and disappear through focal effects, and a parallax effect reinforces the floating and dreamlike atmosphere. To increase immersion, the interface is kept to a minimum; a navigation bar on the left side allows the user to jump from one section to another, or to reveal panels of text.
